ALBERTA SEPARATISM MUST SUCCEED

I’m in the news today. Jason Markusoff gave me a call, and I was more than happy to talk about Alberta separation with him. You can read his article is here.
A few weeks ago, my wife tweeted a video of Jeffrey Rath that got six million views on X (formerly Twitter). That single video catapulted the separatist question to new heights—and made Jeff Rath a minor celebrity in the movement. A movement that is rapidly growing and, as a result, being dismissed by washed-up politicians like Jason Kenney as “a small fringe.” But it’s not just bitter political losers dismissing it—it’s also being shrugged off by Mark Carney, Pierre Poilievre, and the mainstream media. All this despite the fact that the founder of the Reform Party, Preston Manning, has publicly warned that the movement is gaining serious traction.
As someone who has helped build and lead political movements, I can say with absolute certainty: this is typical. As the old saying goes: “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” We’re in the laughing stage right now. The fighting stage will begin in the next six to twelve months. Jason Kenney went through the same cycle with Take Back Alberta. First, he ignored us—he wouldn’t even say my name in public (he still won’t). Then he mocked us, claiming the lunatics were trying to take over the asylum. Then he cheated—cancelling the scheduled vote and moving it to a mail-in ballot. And then… we won. Technically, he won. But his “victory” was so pitiful he was forced to resign in disgrace.
The elites, the talking heads, the “experts”—they don’t actually understand how political organizing works. They assume the status quo will remain the status quo. They treat one poll (disputed by another) as gospel. They claim support for separation is marginal and that no movement could ever get off the ground. They believe that if Albertans are presented with enough charts and talking points, they’ll stay loyal to their abuser. I’m willing to bet they’re wrong—just like they were wrong about COVID, wrong about Modern Monetary Theory, and wrong about gender ideology.
Polls can shift—just look at what happened in Alberta after Kenney resigned, or in Canada after Trudeau’s support collapsed. People respond to events. And we are on the brink of a political event that will shatter conservative hope in Alberta: Mark Carney is going to win a majority government. A lot of people don’t like that I’m saying this—especially the partisan hacks who think I’m not being a “team player.” I’m not saying it because I want it to happen. I’m saying it because it’s obvious. Just last night, an old political organizer messaged me to say that even Jenni Byrne and the CPC war room have conceded defeat. They’re already strategizing how to preserve Pierre’s leadership after the loss.
When Carney wins, hundreds of thousands of Albertans will lose faith in Canada. It happened in 2019, and it will be even more intense in 2025. Danielle Smith won the UCP leadership largely on her promise to pass the Alberta Sovereignty Act. That wasn’t a side issue—it was the defining plank of her campaign. Her opponents attacked her relentlessly over it, but it was the promise of greater autonomy that carried her to victory. That desire—for autonomy, for dignity—is shared by hundreds of thousands of Albertans and will be the central issue in Alberta politics over the next four years.
In the coming weeks, I’ll make the full case for Alberta separation. The highlights: more money for Alberta pensioners, lower taxes for all Albertans—including corporate and income tax—and, most importantly, a future outside of a nation in terminal decline. Canada is an economic disaster waiting to happen. We’ve brought in over 4 million new immigrants while GDP per capita has stagnated. And that’s before even factoring in the aging population. In just five years, the federal government will need an additional $20 billion annually just for Old Age Security. That’s a 3.7% increase in total expenditures—just to keep up with demographic reality. My generation already knows: there will be no pensions for us. Canada has spent itself into oblivion. Its demographics are a death sentence for the young. And worst of all, Canadians seem content to elect another Liberal government and pretend nothing is wrong.
Canada has also decided to follow the United Kingdom down the path of disarmament. Firearms are being progressively outlawed, and this is always the first step for would-be totalitarians. Once the population is disarmed, they are much easier to control. The Canadian military is weak. The police are overworked and underpaid. The only way to enforce authority in the years ahead is through greater disarmament and an expanded police state. I suspect this is exactly what Carney is planning, especially after his recent pledges for even more sweeping gun grabs.
Worse still, Carney has now announced that pipelines will not be an infrastructure priority for his government. Well, he is going to be the government. Every single polling aggregator, panel, and even Doug Ford have acknowledged the obvious: Pierre Poilievre has fumbled the ball. He and Jenni squandered a 20-point lead and now will be lucky to beat Erin O’Toole’s seat count. We also know that Carney’s entire career has been built around ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) dogma—the climate cult. He was one of the biggest advocates of the Carbon Tax until it became politically inconvenient. Now he’s promised to increase taxes on industrial emitters and cap emissions from Alberta’s oil and gas industry.
Despite the rhetoric, Mark Carney is the greatest threat Alberta has ever faced. His life’s work has been in service to the climate change religion. His book Value(s) makes it clear: Canadians must become poorer in order to save the planet. That’s his gospel. And unlike Trudeau, he’s tactically smart and doesn’t come across as a fool. He’s managed to deceive Canadians into giving the Liberals another chance—by pretending we’re at war with the U.S. and must stand alone, relying on Europe as our great ally.
It’s nonsense. Europe is a declining civilization with its own demographic collapse and immigration crisis. More importantly, it’s an ocean away. The United States is our next-door neighbour and represents 25% of the global economy. We cannot thrive while pretending that geography, trade, and reality don’t matter.
Alberta deserves a future. If Canada refuses to provide one, we must build it ourselves.
